Generally considered the best version for advanced, technical players to use.Īll skins, resource packs, maps, mods, etc. Has some elements that are ever so slightly janky or funny, but that's where Java Edition gets a lot of its charm. You can play on the latest version, in Alpha, or anywhere in between. Has the ability to change between versions of the game. Usually gets snapshots/snapshot features earlier and more often. Java Edition (the OG, main PC edition of the game):Ĭan only play with other Java Edition users (still has an enormous community though, don't let this drive you away). Of course you have to buy Java/Bedrock editions separately (and for Bedrock once per platform you want it on) so if you didn't get in during the promo where you could buy both PC versions at once you might care a bit. So in the end it makes little difference to me, the most important thing to me is which version are my friends playing and what's the server IP. Bedrock supports Windows but not Mac or Linux, but also supports modern consoles as well as mobile ports. Java supports Windows, Mac, and Linux, and similarly cross-platform play works for those versions. Or maybe I made that reasoning up and nobody really knows what they think. The only exception is of course PS4, where Sony is afraid if you play Fortnite (or Minecraft) with players from other platforms they may convert you to their evil platforms. Or I could buy Minecraft on 3DS and join from there. So I can join my friend's realm from my PC, or my phone, or my Switch. The big thing is Bedrock games can be played between any version on any supported system. Their feature sets are similar enough you won't notice at first, apart from some different menus and things like that. Generally they try and implement the same features but they may choose a different order/priority to implement or whatever. The original Mojang team works on the Java version while some other company works on Bedrock, which I guess MS got going or contracted out or something. Two different teams work on Bedrock and Java editions. There are other older ports not supported any more but we don't talk about those. OK basically there are two versions: Java and Bedrock.
